Losing a tooth or having to get a tooth extracted is always a tough situation, often leaving people feeling self conscious. While Our LIttleton Dentists can’t always re-insert your old tooth we do provide a few ways to help replace or hide where your tooth once was. By far the best option for most of our patients are dental implants which not only add a tooth but help stave bone loss in the jaw, which is a result of missing teeth.

What Are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are a powerful treatment for replacing teeth with strong, natural-looking artificial teeth. The implant itself is a small, screw-like titanium post that's inserted into the socket of a missing tooth. The implant has an abutment at the top, which we use to attach a natural-looking dental crown to the implant.

What truly sets dental implants apart, however, is their unique property of osseointegration or the ability to grow bone. Because the implant is made from titanium, it literally fuses to the jawbone. This not only creates a stronger foundation for the tooth, but also prevents bone loss – a key problem for other replacement options like dentures. Dental implants are successful more than 95% of the time and can last a lifetime, making them one of the most reliable and long-lasting options for tooth replacement.

Benefits of Dental Implants

Thanks to their unique design, implants offer a number of benefits compared to bridges, dentures, or other tooth replacement options:

  • Osseointegration: Titanium implants fuse with the jawbone, distributing bite force evenly throughout the jaw and preventing bone loss.
  • Natural Looking: We can custom shape and color-match your replacement tooth to perfectly blend in with your natural teeth.
  • Flexible Option: We can use dental implants to replace one tooth, multiple teeth, or an entire dental arch.
  • Convenient Procedure: Dental implants are inserted during a minor surgical procedure with minimal recovery time.
  • Long-Lasting: Dental implants are one of the most durable options for tooth replacement. With proper care, dental implants can last a lifetime!

What Can Dental Implants Treat?

Dental implants offer us a remarkably flexible solution to a number of problems. We offer several options for treatment with dental implants:

Replace a Single Tooth

Dental Implants Replace One Tooth. If you're only missing one tooth or need to have one replaced, dental implants are a great option. Dental implants have the highest success rate for tooth replacement, and we carefully customize your crown (the tooth facade of the implant) to blend in perfectly with natural teeth. Plus, your implant will never decay: with proper oral hygiene, it'll last you the rest of your life.

Replace Multiple Teeth

Dental Implants Replace Multiple Teeth.Implants also offer a flexible solution when multiple teeth need to be replaced. In some cases we may use one implant per replacement tooth, but we can often combine them and use implants to support a bridge. In this circumstance, we may use 2 implants to support 3 or 4 replacement teeth, minimizing treatment cost while still providing a durable, highly effective treatment.

Replace All Teeth

Dental Implants Replace All Teeth.Dental implants can even be used to replace all the teeth in one or both of your upper or lower dental arches. In these circumstances, you have two options for treatment:

  • Dental Implants Support Removable Dentures.Implant-Supported Fixed Dentures: If you want a permanent new set of teeth, we can use implants to support permanent dentures. In this treatment, we may use 5 or 6 implants to support an entire row of replacement teeth, providing you a beautiful, healthy new smile that will last a lifetime! Because the implants will fuse to your jawbone, you'll never have to worry about the bone loss that often comes with regular dentures.
  • Implant-Supported Removable Dentures: Another option is to use implants to support removable dentures. In this treatment, we'll use 5 or 6 implants to create a strong base to which you can attach removable dentures. This gives you the flexibility of removing your dentures to clean them, but all the benefits that come with dental implants.

Caring for Your Dental Implants

Once your dental implant completely heals, caring for it is simple: just treat it like a normal tooth! Simply brush and floss your implant just like you would a natural tooth. With proper oral hygiene, your implant will last a lifetime and protect your jawbone.

Outside of oral hygiene, the only thing to keep in mind for dental implants is that excessive bite forces can cause implants to fail. This is because the bite forces can loosen the attachment of the crown to the implant or of the implant to the bone. This isn't usually a problem for patients if they receive the sufficient number of implants, but if you suffer from bruxism (chronic tooth clenching), it may be an issue. We'll work with you to develop a management plan if excessive bite forces become a problem for your implants.
